Pyrenees Hunting

Hunting in the Pyrenees is controlled in a number of ways besides the outright ban in the national parks. Various private reserves keep the numbers of hunters down by charging high fees. In France, you need to become a member of a fishing club to get rights - this is not difficult and any tourist office will give you a local address. In Spain, fortnightly permits are easily and cheaply obtained from any Icona office (addresses from the local tourist office).

The flight paths of migrating pigeons attract large shooting parties in the area between the Bay of Biscay (Basque Country) and Roncesvalles (Navarra), in the western part of the Pyrenees. Open season is from the middle of September until November 15th. The best known flight paths are those of Valcarlos and those of Echalar.

There are chamois and capercaille, which is very rare and strictly protected. Boar is plentiful in all parts, while rabbit is found in the nearby valleys. there are quail, red-legged partridge and ptarmigan. In the summit areas there are magnificent specimens of chamois of the typical greyish type. In Navarre there is roe-deer, while experiments are carried out to introduce red deer. The Pyrenees have eight large-game reserves which are Alt Pallars-Aran, Cadi, Cerdanya, Los Circos, Freser-Setcases, Los Valles, Benasque and Vinamala.
